12/2/2023 0 Comments Selden top down code zero furler![]() Do not let the sail flag, keep some tension on the sheet, giving as the sail is furled. We have found, (but still experimenting) that falling off, and good coordination between the person on the sheet and the person on the furler is essential. it is a handful to get rolled in a breeze, without getting a bubble in the upper half. Finally we have a Code Zero on a Coligio furler. We have a symmetrical spinnaker with an ATN sock - no issue, but we do not leave it up when the wind gets up, over 12 to 15. ![]() If you use the winch unfurl and refurl when you are in calmer conditions and can do it by hand. Best to crack off on a broad reach when furling in high winds, but if for some reason you cannot, then either a couple of folks furling or using a winch does the job. We have a Solent rig with a 130 and a 100 on Profurl furlers - never had an issue with furling or reefing. ![]() I am also curious how many folks leave the furled spinnaker or Code zero up on the upwind leg or if there is too much performance lost. Having someone work the sheet so it wraps up and down the furled sail at the end helps but it's a pain in the ass. The Code zero works best but all three have a tnedency to unfurl in high wind even if the furling line is kept taught with a bungee cord. The opposite happens with the Selden- the top fulrs first but the the middle stays loose and flaps. The problem with the Facnor is the bottom of the jib begins to furl first vrey tightly leaving the upper jib furled loosely which then starts to flap. Above that and especially when it's 15+ it becomes very hard to furl and often the mid section does not furl completely and begins to flap wildly. They all work well in low to moderate wind- say up to 8 kts. I have a Facnor wire furler for the jib, a Selden top down unit for my asymmetrical spinnaker and a Coligo for my Code zero. Am wondering if others are having the same issues with their headsail furlers as I am and if anyone has advice on how to get around it.
